Climbing Knots

Terminology

  • Loops - knots used to create an attachment point in a rope
  • Hitches - knots used to tie a rope to a carabiner or tree
  • Bends - knots used to tie two ropes together
  • Bight - using the middle of a rope

Figure 8 Follow-Through

The figure 8 follow through loop is the most common way to attach a climbing rope to your harness.

Used to prevent a rope from slipping through a belay device.

Double Fisherman's

Used to join two similar diameter ropes together. Commonly used during anchor building.

Clove Hitch

The clove hitch is typically used for fastening some rope to a carabiner. It is commonly used to fasten a climber to an anchor during a multi pitch climb.

Flat Overhand (European Death Knot)

Used to join two similar sized ropes for rappel. Despite the name, if dressed properly and with 12 inches of tail, this is a safe knot.
