Backpack Coil

The backpack coil is a convenient way to carry a rope (e.g. on a walk-off descent from a climb).

Start by coiling the rope two strands at a time starting with the middle of the rope. Use short to medium length coils about the length of your torso.

Wrap the head of the coil a few times. Pass a bight of both strands through the middle of the head. Pass both free ends through the bight loops. Shoulder the rope and pull it up as high as it will go. Wrap the straps around your waist and all the way around the rope a few times. Tie it off with a square knot or similar knot.
