A bowline is useful in climbing for fixing a rope to a tree. We do not recommend tying into a harness with bowlines, instead we recommend a figure 8.
It should always be backed up with a stopper knot - it is unreliable on it's own when exposed to cyclical loading. The double bowline is a similar knot.
