Climbing helmets are designed to protect you from falling rock and climbing falls. Try on a few at the store to find one that is comfortable.
Choosing a helmet
Fit
Find something comfortable.
Shell material
Helmets with a hard plastic shell are more durable, but slightly heavier. Helmets with a softer, lightweight plastic or limited hardshell coverage are lighter but less durable.
Venting
Pay attention to the venting in the helmet. On hotter days, you will appreciate a well ventilated helmet.
Straps
If you can, try the helmet on in the store to make sure the straps are comfortable. Most helmets have a buckle, but some may feature magnetic assisted closure.
Can I wear my Bike Helmet for climbing?
A bike helmet is better than no helmet. Climbing helmets are designed to deflect rockfall impacting the top of the helmet, while bike helmets are made for one major impact. They have vent holes on the top, which could be a downside for smaller rocks.
