The munter mule overhand is a combination of three knots: The munter hitch, the mule knot, and an overhand. It can be used in a self rescue situation to tie off a load to an anchor and still be releasable under load.
- Tie a munter hitch through a locking carabiner.
- Pull the brake strand tight, then tie a mule knot, which is just a bight of rope being used to tie a half hitch.
- Using the bight coming out of the mule, tie an overhand knot on itself to lock off the mule.
To break down the knot and hold the load, first untie the overhand, then take hold of the brake strand and pull sharply in a fluid motion to undo the mule and transfer the weight onto the brake strand.
