Sandstone is a soft type of rock which has a grainy feel. It is important not to climb up to 2 days after rain (even if the rock appears dry on the surface), because the rock is porous and absorbs water, weakening it significantly, making it much more likely for holds to pull off during climbing. When placing traditional protection in sandstone, it's important to have a tighter fit than in granite, because the rock is softer. The rock can also vary in softness in different climbing areas. It is found in climbing destinations such as Zion National Park, Moab, and Red Rock Canyon.
